Red In The Box
We have finally been able to add a few of those much coveted Red Snappers to the fish box. While the weather has not been too cooperative since the season opened we have had a few pretty days in between the blows.

Calm seas, light breezes and a good bite have made for some easy fishing the past ten days. Plenty of Kings, a good Amberjack on the 4 hour trips and a healthy dose of Red Grouper around have made for some fantastic boards. While there was a couple afternoons where the only big fish we could get to bite were the Gag Groupers and Red Snappers they made for some great catch and release photo opps. Always plenty of "fish sandwich" size critters around to fill up the cooler as well.
“Sit Quietly and Smile.” Anyone know what book that quote is from? While very therapeutic, in this fast paced world it is sometimes hard to do and people might look at you funny. But if you sit quietly and smile while watching a great blue heron fish for breakfast you won’t look the least bit odd.
After better than a week's run of nice weather it blew up this morning. My folks were disapointed we didn't go fishing but as I have learned over the years, it's a lot better to be sittin' on the beach wishing you were fishing than offshore wishing you were on the beach!
Well, its that time of year again! "Children of all ages... time to disconnect from your I-pad, I-pod, Xbox, Playstation, PC, DVD, TV and smartphone and CATCH SOME FISH!!!"
The 6th Annual Grayton Beach Kids Fishing Tournament will be held this Saturday, May 12th beginning at 8am sharp!
The announcement of the "official" Red Snapper season finally showed up in print yesterday. In keeping with their godlike control of us mere mortal fisherfolks the powers that be have set a 40 day (and 40 night) Red Snapper season for 2012- Sounds kinda Biblical, doesn't it?
Another blowy spring day at the beach so I'm able to sit at the desk and type up a fishing report. The weatherman had predicted winds at 5 to 10 and seas at 1 to 2 this morning. Of course this is from the same group (NOAA) that says there are no Red Snappers-- at least they predicted that it would be dark last night right....
The Kings showed up in force along with all the Spring break folks last week. We were able to limit out on several trips and still have plenty of time to add other critters to the box even on the 3 and 4 hr trips.
I have been steady running bottom trips everyday it's pretty. The cobias are here but the weather has kept me on the hill the days I have had trips scheduled to chase 'em.
Oh well, we are filling up the board (and box) with Snappers we get to keep. The Vermillion Snappers have moved in with a good grade of fish as well as big numbers. My folks have been landing around 20 to 40 of the tasty bright red snappers a trip as well as a few Triggers and lots of Pinks.
The weather has finally turned to perfect and I got to run several trips the past few days. As the title says, the big news is the first cobia of the season (2012) was brought in to Grayton Beach today.
Capt Tyler Hammond on the "Too Dead Fish" set the bar high with a 67 pound fish caught by his charter yesterday morning. I don't know who was more excited, the angler or the captain!
