The Paper Bear Opens At The Florida Film Festival
April 10, 2025 by SoWal Staff

Forget the sugar-white sands for a moment, SoWal beach lovers. There is so much more to Northwest Florida and it is all around us ready to be discovered.
A new voice is emerging from the Sunshine State, one that whispers of ancient forests, hidden wetlands, and a biodiversity so rich it rivals any ecosystem. The Paper Bear, a dedicated conservation collective, is poised to release a groundbreaking feature film that will pull back the curtain on the untamed soul of Northwest Florida. Prepare to journey alongside the region's most charismatic resident – the majestic black bear – in a coming-of-age odyssey that will redefine your perception of this coastal haven.
While sunseekers flock to the famed shores, a deeper truth lies inland. Northwest Florida isn't just about turquoise waters; it's a biological hotspot of global significance, ranking among North America's top five for species richness. Within its borders pulse over 57 distinct ecosystems, a mosaic of life intricately connected. And at the heart of this wild tapestry roams the black bear, a keystone species whose fate is inextricably linked to the health of this entire natural realm. As an umbrella species, the bear's expansive territory and reliance on diverse habitats make its conservation a vital strategy for safeguarding countless other creatures and their shared homes.
The stakes are high. In an era defined by climate change, the preservation of biodiversity isn't a fringe concern – it's a frontline defense. These vibrant ecosystems provide essential services: bolstering food security, yielding vital medicines, and naturally regulating the delicate balance of our environment. As visitor numbers swell and new residents arrive, the imperative to foster a deeper understanding of this ecological treasure becomes paramount. We must move beyond surface appreciation and cultivate a collective ethic of harmonious coexistence.
The Paper Bear's mission extends far beyond a single cinematic release. Their vision encompasses a sustained campaign of educational content, both feature-length explorations and bite-sized insights, designed to ignite passion and inspire action across the region. It's an invitation to all who cherish the wild heart of Florida to join the conversation and become stewards of this extraordinary landscape. Prepare to be captivated, to be educated, and ultimately, to be moved to protect the wild beauty that lies just beyond the beach.
The Paper Bear has been officially selected for the Florida Film Festival in Orlando, Florida, which will take place from April 11 to 20, 2025. Out of nearly 3,000 submissions, the film is among the record-breaking 187 films showcased this year.
The world premiere of the nonprofit feature film will happen right here in Florida.
